Westport’s New Play: ‘Conscience’
Westport Community Theatre presents a captivating production of ‘Conscience’ from November 14th to 30th. This comedic drama, penned by Joe DiPietro and directed by Alexander Kulcsar, offers a compelling portrayal of a pivotal moment in American history. The play centers around the renowned speech delivered by US Senator Margaret Chase Smith on June 1, 1950, from the Senate floor, titled ‘Declaration of Conscience’.
The play brilliantly captures Senator Smith’s wit and concern as she addresses the detrimental impact of Senator Joseph McCarthy’s red-baiting tactics on the Senate, media, and the nation. In her powerful speech, Smith calls upon her colleagues to shift their political mindset from party-line thinking to a more patriotic and American perspective, emphasizing the importance of individual freedom and national security.
